Q: Is the EVS camera complicated to install?
A: EVS systems are not particularly complicated to install. Basic knowledge about mechanics and electronics will help but are not needed. Since all the hardware setup is done here in the factory the most complicated part of an install is figuring our a proper vantage point for your camera. Once you find a suitable location, the installation is as simple as hanging a box on a wall and mounting the camera unit. One the hardware is in place and power and internet are connected, EVS will be able to access your unit and walk you through the software part of the install.

Q: What type of locations can I install an EVS camera?
A: EVS camera’s can be installed virtually anywhere. You probably want to make sure you locate the camera in a place you own or a site that you have permission to use. All EVS camera systems are contained in weatherproof housings and boxes so they are readily placed outdoors to suit your location. Some camera have been setup in highly remote areas where there is no power or internet connection. This is possible with the solar power option and either the cell modem or satellite modem option, both, of which, are available on the MicroBiscuit system. Most job’s will only require mounting on a pole or roof parapet wall. You will need to specify your mounting location to EVS before shipment to ensure you receive the proper mounting bracket and hardware.

Q: What are some extra measures I can do to ensure a proper install?
A: Most important to any install is to make sure to test the unit prior to installing it at the site. When installing the unit in the field it is important to make sure you fully secure the system to the mounting surface. For a pole installation make sure the adjustable clamps are fully tightened. For a wall installation make sure the bolts are secured properly onto the surface you are mounting to. Also, if you’ve had to remove or add a cable in the housings be sure to properly reseal the cable glands to ensure the unit is weather tight. Always double check that the system is properly connected before applying power. This helps to prevent accidental wiring faults. If possible never leave the system boxes open and unattended during an install. When running the wiring from the camera housing make sure that it is properly secured and there is enough slack in the cable for pan and tilt movement. Also make sure the cable is properly secured to the pole/wall. Never leave loops or excess cable hanging from the wall or pole. When laying the cable underground be certain that you do not cut any of your existing in ground utilities. Also if underground be certain that the location of the underground cable is properly marked off.

Q: Do you offer installations in my town?
A: Yes, we will install all over America. You can find out more on our services page.

Q: Do I have to get permits to run the cables that come with the system?
A: The cables that come with the system carry only low voltage AC and usually no permits are required. Check with your local electrician to find out exactly what the requirement are for your area. If you decide to install the transformer box that comes with the system outdoors you are required to get a permit to run 110V AC. Again, contact you local electrician to find out about 110V AC requirements. For this reason we recommend that the transformer part of your system be located indoors.

Q: Are all the boxes weatherproof?
A: Yes, all the boxes that come with a typical system are watertight enclosures. To ensure the integrity of the boxes always make sure the cable entry glands are fully tightened and sealed.

Q: Can I install the entire system on a pole?
A: Yes, the entire system can be installed on an electrical/telephone pole. The boxes all come watertight and with pole mounts, when specified in your order.

Q: Is it better to mount the system inside or outside?
A: Typically, it is at your advantage to have the computer side of a Mini/MicroBiscuit unit indoors and the transformer side of the All-in-oneBiscuit indoors. This will allow for easy access to the monitor, keyboard, and mouse ports inside the unit should you ever need to reconfigure the software. Also it is typically less environmentally detrimental to the unit.

Q: Ok, I’m ready to install the unit. Is there any special tools I’ll need onsite?
A: Firstly, you need to make sure you have access to the area you will be installing. If the camera side of the unit is located on the top of a pole, make sure you have the proper equipment to reach the top. It is at your advantage to have on hand the keyboard and mouse that are shipped with the unit as well as a monitor to help you configure the software. Figure our what type of tools you will need to mount the unit on the wall or pole by inspecting the sight beforehand. You might need an extension cord, for example, if there is no outlet nearby to plug in your monitor. If you have one, a Digital Multi Meter is a powerful tool that can help diagnose hidden problems with onsite voltage or other problems with the wiring.

Q: What is the first thing I should do after powering up the system?
A: The first thing you should do after you have completely installed the system is to call EVS to help you through the software setup portion of the install. We can remotely access the unit if connected to the internet and guide you through most of the setup.

Q: What exactly will I need for an internet connection?
A: All EVS systems come ready to hook up to the internet. If you plan on using just a dialup account we will ask you to specify the details before we ship the unit to you so the field work is less tedious. As always all biscuits come with an Ethernet port. This allows you to connect the unit directly into a network with a high speed broadband connection. This is the preferred configuration and usually the easiest to setup. If there is no available LAN connection you can always purchase a wireless extender kit.

Q: Is it better to hang the wiring in the air or bury the cabling underground?
A: Since the wiring only carries a low voltage AC(20v) usually no permits are required to bury the cable in the ground. If your install is at a jobsite where they might dig into the ground and potentially damage the cable remember to mark off the location and show it to the job foreman. Hanging the cable can potentially be dangerous is car or other vehicles travel underneath the cable. Make sure to tie off the cable properly so there is not extra slack causing the cable to hang low. There is no preferred way to run the cable, only what will best fit your location.

Q: Is there anything excessively fragile included in the system?
A: Be sure when transporting the unit that the glass on the front of the camera housing is well protected. Even though the hard disk drive is well secured inside the unit it is very sensitive to shocks when the unit is turned on.

Q: How long does a typical install take?
A: A lot of factors can add to the overall time it takes to fully setup the system. The location can be a major factor especially when the unit is located on the top of a poll or tower. The add-ons typically add to the installation time as well. Overall it should take no more that a day to get the physical hardware installed at your location. Software setup can usually take another day with the help of EVS.

Q: Are there extra measures I can take to prevent system failure?
A: Yes. If you are located in an area that is susceptible to lightning storms then properly grounding the unit should be a top priority. EVS also offers a lightning protection kit that includes a lightning rod and a large gauge copper braided cable to ensure proper grounding. If you are unsure that the outlet you are using is providing a proper ground connection then please contact your local electrician. Also make sure that all the cable entry glands are properly tightened and secured.

Q: Will an improper installation void my warranty?
A: EVS warrantees against product defects, not user error. If a unit is damaged from an improper installation EVS will not honor your warranty.

Q: Do I have to open the boxes up to install the system?
A: Yes, the power switches are always located inside the enclosures. Take a few minutes when you first get your unit to familiarize yourself with the location of the ports to connect with the system.

Q: Will EVS help me with my install if I call?
A: On the initial install, EVS will walk you through from beginning to end. However if you decide to move the unit it is assumed that you will take care of project yourself.
